Brain Injury Poetry on Coma and Survival
Poetry and Coma
Waking Dreams
By Ashley Byblow
Eyes that see
Eyes that shine
Eyes reflecting
an active mind
A mind that reels
A mind that flies
A mind that stretches
across the skies
You hurdle fences
You break through walls
you accomplish miracles
both large and small
The spirit reaches
The spirit strives
The spirit cries out
“I am ALIVE!”
Yet silence continues
Yet silence screams
Yet silence pervades
comatose dreams
Though in a coma
I am not asleep
My mind continues
to hear them weep
I want to wipe
my mother’s tears
I want to assuage
my brother’s fears
I can hear you
I can cope
I can refuse
to give up hope
You must stay with me
You must be here
You must remember
I hold you dear
One day soon
I will awake
So don’t give up
My life’s at stake.
