Post Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD
By Nadia Webb ~ 2006

What is PTSD?

PTSD is the diagnosis given to individuals with specific psychological symptoms following a traumatic event in their lives.  The symptoms of PTSD include...
  • intrusive thoughts and memories of the traumatic event (flashbacks)
  • emotional numbness
  • avoiding reminders of the trauma, and
  • hypervigilance (overly alert) to possible dangers.

The symptoms of PTSD may appear after a person is exposed to a traumatic situation where a person fears for their safety or the safety of someone they care about.  The traumatic situation typically involves feeling…

  • frightened
  • horrified or
  • helpless to prevent what is happening.

The risk of PTSD increases when a person feels betrayed or deliberately victimized.  Other factors that increase the risk are an environment that is unsupportive, blaming or stigmatizing.  People with prior histories of abuse or mental health problems are at greater risk.
