Far Away from TBI

It happened on a spring night in May – driving home from church with my younger brother and after dropping off my girlfriend after a Wendys’ dinner. It was about 5-10 minutes before I had to be home while someone (the writer of this email) forgot to use the restroom before he quickly rushed out of his girlfriend’s house to hurry, get home, and not be late…

I was leaving her house with all smiles after a fun-filled weekend which involved a Beach Boys Concert and fun church function that I will have to get back to you on this with the exact name because I forget due to my short term memory loss. Plus, I had just finished the spring football practice for the upcoming 1995-1996 season as a junior and had been exposed to several different positions (wide receiver, halfback, and quarterback) on the final night (Friday night, May 19th) during the game. On the last play of the night as the quarterback, I took the snap– quickly moved to the right and slipped behind my right tackle (for 20+ yards) into the end zone for a touchdown.

Just like the phrase of today- Life is Good. Well, life was pretty good! This was just a tip of the iceberg of excitement in my life at that moment in time: an athlete in basically all sports, a great girlfriend, driving with my own car, great family to travel and do things with, just turned 16 years old (on January 8th), learning was not a problem, school was becoming easier and closer to graduation, and it was nearing the summer for the school year.  Possibilities were endless- 16 and a girlfriend— oh c’mon you know: FUN, I do not have to describe it!!!) Close to the top in my class in grades, starting to have ideas for colleges, career paths to choose from: continue with athletics at this college and/or continue with academics to see what the future has in store for me. Let’s see: active in church youth group, parents had just moved into a new house, etc., etc… Loving what I wanted to, on my own terms, how I wanted to and when it was convenient for me. Life setting up to be basically a downhill slide…

One event…

That would change my life forever and completely!

On May 21st, 1995 at 10:35pm on a Sunday night, I was involved in a car accident (T-bone) which left me unconscious. The jaws of life had to be used to remove me from the car

Ladies & gentlemen- I do have a complete story to tell to, not just to you, but to all of those in America and beyond who are interested individuals and families of loved ones with a brain injuries of any kind, in my case – severe brain injury.

Recently, “it” finally hit me that I needed to do something about my story and tell others for encouragement, inspiration, motivation and mainly for HOPE for those who are needing it….

This is just the beginning!!!

I would love to tell you the rest of the story and what is on my heart.

I am not finished– look below:

Wisdom in reflection,
Strength for today,
Endurance throughout tomorrow

I put this quote together throughout years of rehabilitation, grade school, college, into the workplace, marriage, and living life! If you will apply this quote to your life (TBI or not), you will see everything change for the better!

Until later

God bless!!!
