Helmet Safety in Sports – Protect Your Brain

When we think about protecting our brains, we usually think of bicycle or motorcycle helmets and seatbelts in cars.  As clinicians and researchers showed us the evidence that these protective devices reduce both deaths and the severity of brain injuries, safety awareness programs have expanded to many sports – football, hockey, skiing, snowboarding, ATVing, just to name a few.

Christopher Reeves’ spinal cord injury was a tragic reminder of the dangers of horseback riding should a rider fall. An important Helmet Safety Symposium has just been held by Riders4Helmets and SUCCEED®, bringing together representatives from the equestrian world to discuss the importance of wearing helmets, rider safety, helmet designs, rules and more. The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) votes on proposed helmet rule changes at the USEF Annual Convention Jan. 13-17th in Louisville, Kentucky.
