Head Outdoors for Summer Fun

The weather has been extremely unusual in Canada this year. Normally, we could be outdoors at the beach by now, instead the weather warms only intermittently. Even if the sun doesn’t shine, people can still enjoy outdoor activities, which are essential to a well-balanced and healthy lifestyle.  When enjoying your favourite activities, like skateboarding and biking, keep these safety tips in mind. 

Helmets and Protective Gear

Wrap yourself in the necessary protective gear for any sport.  Wear a helmet for biking, inline skating, scooter riding and skateboarding. Helmets are not designed with a “one type fits all sports” quality. It’s important to wear a skate specific helmet when operating a small wheeled vehicle (in-line skates, scooter and skateboard) and to use a “bike helmet” when riding a bike.  Helmets should fit snug and chinstraps should be fastened at all times! Wear pads and guards to protect knees, elbows, and wrists, particularly if you are new to a sport.  Keep pads and helmet clean.   

Common Sense

  • Avoid riding small wheeled vehicles on the street
  • Tricks on small wheeled vehicles require practice
  • Practice tricks and jumps in safe areas
  • Do not skate or use scooters on wet surfaces or areas with cracks and debris
  • Wear bright gear when out at night
  • Keep your head up
  • Stay alert
  • Know your limits
  • Take the time to learn about your sport, proper use of equipment and how to improve your skills
