Begin Again Ranch

                                 by Terri Mongait

Hello fellow brain injury survivors.  My name is Terri Mongait and I, too, am a TBI survivor.  Months after my accident in September, 2009 I was able to complete my studies and received my certification in Equine Gestalt Coaching.  I am now a Brain Injury Recovery Coach at Begin Again Ranch in Sedalia, Colorado.

I named my ranch – Begin Again – because, for me, every day is an opportunity to do just that – begin again.  Almost 3 years since my injury, I am still going through my own recovery process.  I take things one day at a time.  Some days are better than others.  Some days I ROCK the barn.  My horses are here to support my journey.  They test me when I need to be pushed and they just hang with me when I need quiet time.  That is why I use them in my support of others on this same journey.

Since moving to Colorado last July, we have experienced many changes.  I now have to care for 3-4 horses, 5 chickens, 1 dog and 1 mini donkey.  I have lots of chores to do AND I am starting my own business.  Yes, there are definite days when I do not want to turn on the computer, when I want the horses to clean up their own poop, and when I really don’t care what my husband wants for lunch or dinner.  I stop, take a deep cleansing breath, close my eyes, smile and…begin again.  It could be worse, it could be better.  But this is my journey and I am grateful for every new day.  I am grateful for my husband, my caregiver, who has been with me every step of the way.  And I’m grateful for all my critters who push me when I need to be pushed and really don’t care to join my pity party.  They remind me to embrace the present – enjoy the now – and don’t worry about the future.

In closing today, I’d like to share a favorite quote:  “Courage does not always roar.  Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of a difficult day that says – I will Begin Again tomorrow.”  Take each day as it comes and know that you, too, can begin again tomorrow.

If you’re in the neighborhood, come on out and stop by Begin Again Ranch.
