Letters Home To Mom

Sitting here
In a battle zone
Trying to write a letter home
To a mother who misses her son
across the world
Fighting a war

The words are hard to find
What do you say to a mother
Who just a few short years ago
Was waking you up for school?

Writing put on hold
A random rocket attack…

Returning to the letter
Hours later
Trying to have a steady hand
Not letting on
Not a clue
About the dangers I see everyday

Attempting to calm my mother
Reassure her
That her little boy is safe
But when this little boy returns
I will be a war-hardened man
Changed by the horrors of war
