Brain Envy

42-15530351“Recently, I’ve been listening to Dr. Daniel Amen’s CDs from his best-selling book, Change Your Brain, Change Your Body. With many of us making New Year’s resolutions to change a part of our life in some way, Dr. Amen’s advice seemed like great timing in aligning with our new goals. So, I began my inquisitive adventure on how to change my brain so that I could change my body.

Changing your brain means to literally physically change your brain. As we get older, our brains tend to shrink. (Yes, size does matter.) But, how can we reverse the aging process to have a better brain than before? Dr. Amen offers some tips to building a better brain.

Wishing for a normal brain

First, have brain envy. What does this mean? Recently, I took part in a brain injury research study. I underwent two functional MRIs, to which the technician gave me scans of my brain. Needless to say and as expected, there is a “dent” or hole in my brain’s right frontal lobe from my car crash injury where the cells were smashed and have died. Though I lead a “normal” life, I desire to have a normal brain. When you hurt your brain, it may not work right. And, I’m not talking about getting hit in the head. I’m talking about hurting your brain with other things, like alcohol, smoking, negative thoughts, medication, etc. Having brain envy will help you not want to hurt your brain and, instead, do things which will help it in years to come, such as taking brain healthy supplements, participating in life-long learning, and more, to avoid the possible onset of various brain diseases.

Can brain envy help you?

If your brain works right, you work right. If your brain has trouble functioning and thinking, so will you in every aspect of your life, including relationships. Why not develop brain envy today so that you can continue or begin to live a happy life? I know I want to follow along a path to a healthy life in all areas, mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and financially. Since this is such an in depth topic, I’ll talk more about how you can change your brain to change your body in future articles. Until then, why not start with developing brain envy to want to have the best brain and function the best you can to get the most out of life? What are some things that you could start today?”
