MY BRAIN AND I

Jennifer Callaghan writes from personal experience on sustaining severe traumatic brain injury and its aftermath. She describes in poignant detail her struggles, obstacles, and frustrations, as well as the triumphs and gains over a 16-year period.

Her story begins with a traumatic experience of being the victim of another personís recklessness in traffic (speeding). She recounts vividly her immediate familyís capacity to cope with her trauma and debilitation, her own anger and irritability because of lost skills and abilities, and the loss of inhibitions developed from former lifestyle.

As her journey continued, Jennifer reveals her thinking, feelings, and perceptions of the world around her. Her recall of these processes is attributable to a thoughtful doctor suggesting she journal what she was happening in her life, which seemed an insurmountable task. The journaling proved to be instructional and rewarding.

Not What I Expected: My Life with a Brain Injury (I didnít know I had!)

Recovery from her physical wounds was all that seemed to matter back in 1977 when Saraís legs were badly broken in car crash that upended her college graduation and shiny new career plans.

Imagine living your life with an undiagnosed brain injury. No one told Sara Lewis about the ďsevere concussionĒ noted by a doctor at the hospital. So she lived for nearly 3 decades with a brain injury she didnít know she had. During those years, frustration over thinking problems grew. Wrong turns, misunderstandings, and defeats at work and at home led to emotional and behavioral meltdowns that are the hallmark of so many brain injuries. Public awareness was growing, but not fast enough to save Sara from ruining her career, losing friends, and becoming more and more isolated.

Even after her traumatic brain injury was diagnosed, it took another decade and another trip to graduate school to become a speech-language pathologist for her to understand its impact on her life. Acknowledging and adapting to her brain injury has finally freed her to live her life fully as a survivor of a brain injury.

Not What I Expected is also available as an eBook click here.

The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction

Most addictive behavior is rooted in some type of loss, be it the death of a loved one, coming to terms with limitations set by chronic health problems, or the end of a relationship. By turning to drugs and alcohol, people who have suffered a loss can numb their grief. In the process, they postpone their healing and can drive themselves further into addiction.

The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction offers readers an effective program for working through their addiction and grief with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Created by a psychologist who works for the Department of Veterans Affairs and a marriage and family therapist who works for Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, this mindfulness training workbook is effective for treating the emotion dysregulation, stress, depression, and grief that lie at the heart of addiction. No matter the loss, the mindfulness skills in this workbook help readers process their grief, determine the function their addiction is serving, and replace the addiction with healthy coping behaviors.
